Reviews

The music on this set is mostly cool-toned bop, the style played often in the 1950s by such tenors as Stan Getz and Zoot Sims. Alan Barnes, who is somewhat known for his baritone and clarinet playing, sticks to alto on this excellent quartet set, performing such numbers as Gerry Mulligan's "Five Brothers," "Bouncing With Bud," Sims' "Red Door" and Art Pepper's "Suzie The Poodle." The British group features a tasteful rhythm section led by pianist Jim Watson and swings lightly but purposefully. This is an easy set for straightahead jazz fans to enjoy and a fine example of Barnes' work on alto.
